Coimbatore, March 22, 2025: A recent terrestrial bird census in the Coimbatore Forest Division has recorded an impressive 232 species, reaffirming the region’s status as a crucial habitat for avian biodiversity. The survey, conducted on March 15 and 16, 2025, documented a total of 9,033 individual birds, including both resident and migratory species.

Key Findings of the Census

Total Birds Counted: 9,033
Land Birds: 207 species
Water Birds: 25 species
Migratory Species: 41

The census, organized by the Coimbatore Forest Department in collaboration with Coimbatore Nature Society (CNS), The Nature and Butterfly Society (TNBS), and WWF-India, covered 25 locations across different forest ranges.

Notable Species Observed

Among the diverse birdlife recorded, some of the most commonly spotted species included:
Yellow-billed Babbler
Red-vented Bulbul
Black Drongo
Indian Peafowl
Rose-ringed Parakeet

Additionally, 41 migratory species were recorded, highlighting the region’s significance as a wintering ground for birds from across the globe.

Significance of the Survey

The findings underscore Coimbatore’s rich avian biodiversity, with over 285 bird species documented in the region over the years. Experts emphasize that protecting forested landscapes and wetlands is crucial for sustaining these bird populations, particularly as habitat loss and climate change threaten global biodiversity.
