The government conducted an e-auction for 730 FM channels in 234 new cities through a transparent system on July 9-10, 2025. The auction was widely publicized in print and electronic media. There were 18 successful bidders, including nine new entrants to the FM radio sector. There are 386 private FM radio channels in operation.

Under the private FM radio policy, every broadcaster must ensure that at least 20 per cent of its daily broadcast content is in the local language of the city and promote local content, including programmes on regional culture , traditions and folk music.

The Phase 3 policy for private FM radio allows broadcasters access to Prasar Bharati towers and sites, wherever available , to enable faster program launches. The government issues Letters of Intent (LOIs) and executes Permission Agreements (GOPAs). These set clear timelines for operations, especially in LWE and aspirational districts.

The government adopts a multi-pronged approach by monitoring the broadcast of public service announcements and government schemes. During emergencies and critical operations, the government maintains close coordination with broadcasters to ensure the timely dissemination of verified information.

This information was given by Dr. L. Murugan, Minister of State for Information & Broadcasting and Parliamentary Affairs, in a written reply to an unstarred question by Shri I. S. Inbadurai in the Rajya Sabha.
